What each treatment actually does

Fat freezing / cryolipolysis

A cooling attachment sits on the treatment area. With vacuum-based devices, it draws a bulge into the attachment and cools the fat beneath the skin. The body gradually clears damaged fat cells.

The target is a local fat bulge. It is not a treatment for obesity.

Radiofrequency / RF

RF uses electromagnetic energy to heat tissue. Skin-tightening devices aim to stimulate collagen, a protein that helps support skin. Other RF devices target fat.

Skin tightening and fat reduction are different goals. External RF and RF with needles are different procedures.

Ultrasound / ultrasonic cavitation

Ultrasound is sound above the range people can hear. Cavitation refers to tiny bubbles forming and collapsing in fluid. Ultrasound body treatments use sound energy, with effects that depend on the device.

A service called “cavitation” does not identify a specific machine. Evidence for one device cannot establish results for another.

Electrical muscle stimulation / EMS

Electrical current makes muscles contract. This targets muscle activity, rather than cooling a fat bulge or heating skin.

Generic EMS equipment and a named branded system should be researched separately.

Magnetic muscle stimulation

A changing magnetic field induces electrical currents that trigger muscle contractions. It uses a different delivery method from electrical stimulation through electrodes.

The device name matters. “Muscle stimulation” alone does not tell you which technology is used.

Massage and body wraps

Massage applies pressure to the body. A wrap is a covering applied around a body area, sometimes with products. Neither name describes a cooling, RF or ultrasound device.

The FTC flags substantial weight-loss promises for wraps and creams as false claims. Ask what is actually included in the service.

Fat, loose skin and muscle tone are different things

A fat bulge is a local pocket of fat. Loose skin is skin that hangs or folds. Muscle tone concerns the muscle beneath them. A treatment aimed at one does not automatically address the others. Read the body-contouring overview.

For a change in body weight or a health concern, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about weight management. This guide explains cosmetic service types.

What about liposuction or a tummy tuck?

These are surgical procedures. Liposuction removes fat by suction. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and can address the abdominal contour. They have a different consultation and recovery pathway from the device treatments above. Read about surgical and non-surgical options.
